Budgeting guide

Budgeting guide: zero-based budgeting, envelopes and UK examples

Zero-based budgeting means giving every pound or dollar of income a job before you spend it, so that income minus planned spending equals zero. Envelope budgeting is the same idea with one pot per category. This guide links every Stillware pillar page, calculator and worked example, grouped by the problem you are solving.

Start here: what is zero-based budgeting?

Zero-based budgeting means income minus planned spending, saving and debt payments equals zero: every pound or dollar is given a job before the month starts. Envelope budgeting is the same method with one named envelope for each category, so you can see what is left to spend.

Apps and alternatives: which budgeting app should I use?

Budgeting apps differ on three things that decide the choice: what they cost over several years, whether they need an internet connection or a bank login, and whether your data lives on your device or on a server. These pages compare them.

Your situation: how should I budget with my income?

How you are paid changes the first step. Weekly pay, monthly pay, an irregular income and a low income each need a slightly different setup, and so does money spread across several accounts. These guides give the steps with worked numbers.

Saving: sinking funds and an emergency fund

A sinking fund is money set aside a little at a time for a bill you know is coming, such as a car repair or an annual premium. An emergency fund covers the costs you cannot predict. In a zero-based budget both are categories that you fund before the month starts.

Debt: minimum payments and the emergency fund trade-off

A minimum payment is the smallest amount a lender will accept, not a plan for clearing the debt. These pages show what a minimum payment actually pays off, and how to weigh building an emergency fund against paying debt down faster.

Each Zeroed Short has a companion article that works every number on a UK household’s sheet, so you can check the maths. The households are illustrations built from typical UK figures, not real people. They are grouped by money problem, newest first.
